It is the type of embroidery in which applique fabric (decorative) is layered down to the base fabric with any fusible backing or sewn with tack-down stitches. This step reduces the stitch count of the design while fostering more creativity and productivity. The decorative fabric you use could be any material or patch, or scraped piece in random shapes. This technique is mostly used for crafts, home decor, quilts, baby items, and accessories as well. How to embroider an applique design with a machine?

Material needed:
- Base fabric (linen, terry, etc)
- Applique fabric
- Hoop or frame
- Fusible backing
- Stabiliser (cutaway or tearaway depending on the used fabric)
- Applique curved scissors or snips
- Standard 75/11 embroidery needle
- Spray adhesive
- Embroidery thread
- Any good embroidery machine
Procedure:
The choice of material varies according to the project. Whatever you create, the steps will be the same.
Step 01:
Take one piece of printed fabric for applique and base fabric (plain). Cut out one large piece of backing material slightly larger than the hoop/frame. You can also use glitter heat transfer vinyl or any regular fabric backing.
Step 02:
Place the piece of backing material on the back side of the plain fabric. Hoop two layers of fabric together and secure them by tightening the screw of the hoop.
Step 03:
Now upload your digitized applique design. Plug the USB flash drive into the machine and choose the USB icon where you will be able to see your designs.
Step 04:
Take the hoop into your sewing embroidery machine and close the lever. And start threading the machine by following the numbers given on the machine. You will also find automatic thread systems in baby lock and brother machine models for quick working.
Step 05:
Lower the presser foot and click on the green button on the screen to start embroidering the applique.
- Start creating the placement stitch first that is used for the background fabric. Make sure to keep these stitches flat.
- Move forward and run a tack down stitch. Here is the plus advice for you. Don’t put your fingers in the embroidery field when the machine is working. Once you’ve done with this, either take the hoop off the machine and trim the excessive thread or jump to the next stitch. Repeats the same process with featured or applique fabric as well.
- Go for the final stitch which is the satin stitch. This stitch will go around the outline of the whole design. Ensure to keep an eye on the machine to check whether it stitches the way it is supposed to.
Step 06:
After finishing stitching the applique, remove the hoop from the machine. Trim the stabilizer and strings from the back without cutting the fabric. Having soft fabric at the back of the design will help prevent rashes for people with sensitive skin. This is how you can embroider adorable appliques with a machine that takes around 40 minutes.
