Cap embroidery
Caps or hats are sold-out accessories either as headgear or for branding. Hat embroidery is a procedure that involves tailoring an average hat with a design (logo, symbol, typography) to create an iconic piece using the same steps as standard machine embroidery. There are a lot of hat styles available, and you can embroider any design on any cap or hat with the proper knowledge of using embroidery supplies. You can embroider the design on any side, front, and back of the hat/cap, and the standard design size is 2 inches. For more details about the types of hats used in embroidery, you can explore the blog section of Emdigitizer’s official website.
Although hat/cap embroidery turns into a profitable vendor, this process is also intimidating. Have a look at the following tips below.
- Choose the needles for embroidering hats wisely. If You are dealing with a hat made up of material, use a 75/11 needle that is a standard one. But if you are working on a puffy or foamy material, go with an 80/12 needle. And for metallic types of thread, 90/14 is the best option.
- Digitizing is a step that decides how your design will stitch out. Make sure to give all the details to your digitizer from the beginning.
- Make sure to hoop your cap/hat correctly. You can use a 4 x 12 hoop for a hat with three basic pointers to secure it cap nicely. Putting a grip on a hat is important, especially when working on a mesh. When you feel your hat is bouncing all over the place, add an extra sheet of tearaway stabilizer to keep it flat so that your design stitches out nicely.
- Avoid adding small details and multiple colors to the cap/hat design, especially on puffy material. Keep the hat simple for a neat finished detail.
- The embroidery machine has a different speed you need to keep control of the speed when working on a cap or hat. You must know the speed that your machine likes to be when embroidering mesh or puff material.
How to embroider a hat?
We want you to support us from scratch. So, after getting a digitized design file from us, we share a tutorial with you about how you can embroider this design on your favorite hat or cap. Have a look at the steps below.
Material required:
- Embroidery machine
- Titanium-coated 80/12 needles
- Polyester 40-wt thread
- Six-panel structured snapback hat
- Hat frame
- 3-millimetre embroidery foam
- USB drive
- Tape
- Scissor
- Heat gun
- Cleaning brush
Step 01: Setup file
The first step is to set up the file you received from the digitizer. This file has all the information such as stitch count, how to lay out the stitch, and its sequence.
Now, transfer this DST file to your machine via a USB drive. Click on the icon of USB, and the design will load.
Step 02: Setup your machine
After plugging USB, click on the machine icon where you load the design and locate this file.
Now proceed to set your machine for embroidery.
Select thread:
First, select the thread. I want a white color for my design, so press 8 twice.
One for a thread is for laying the base stitch over the foam and the second is for stitching the actual design on the hat.
Select hoop for hat:
Click on the hat hoop and press ok.
Select stitch:
Go to the auto manual option and set it to A/A from the machine that controls when to run and stop to put the foam, set the first stitch, and run stitches throughout the design.
Now, we lock the design and machine and jump to prepare the hat.
Step 03: Prepare the hat frame
It’s time to select the hat style of your choice. Here, we choose a black snapback hat but you can choose according to your taste. Unbuckle the snaps, fold the sweatband, and put it underneath into a machine frame. Line up the center of the hat with the little notch on the tab. Hold it down, bring over the strip, and buckle it in. Now it is ready to go into the machine.
Step 04: Take the frame into the machine
Place the hat into the machine and snap it in place.
After loading our design, hold the press foot down and start tracing the area first where you want to stitch your design.
After that, take a piece of the foam, and lay it down with two pieces of tape.Â
Once done, press start. The machine started embroidering the design on a hat.
Once the machine completes the design, turn it off. Push the side button and spin the frame to detach it from the machine.
Step 05: Clear the excessive thread for a neat look
Take the hat off from the machine and take the blinder clip that is present on both sides of the frame.
Peel off the foam, and clean the loose thread hanging with the scissors.Â
Take a brush to clean the working area and remove cut-off threads.
In the last step, take a heat gun that helps to secure all the threads and shrink down the foam for a neat look. That’s how you can embroider a hat with a machine in a few easy steps.

I had emailed for a price of replacement logo’s and name printing on shirts, on arrival the garments were double checked to make sure the order was correct and everyone was friendly and efficient, from previous experience I am confident the garments will be ready for collection on time and with a job well done.

We do most of our digitizing with them. We are happy with the quality and service. We have an occasional logo that is difficult and needs edits if they can’t get it quite right after a couple of times we have a local digitizer that can help with the issue.

EMdigitizer are just a great all round company. The designs come back to you very quickly, the prices are unbeatable and the assistance you get is always first class. I especially love the live chat as sometimes its difficult to get a point across via email messages so to have instant customer service is a big bonus. When you need a design edited, its done no quibble and sent back to you promptly so you can produce it to your customer and get the job done. Overall EMdigitizer always give a great service at a great price, I have been a customer for a number of years and will be pleased to be continuing to give them my support.

I requested 4 company logos at around 8PM on a Monday. After a little conversation, and finalizing the work at about 10PM, I went to bed. I woke up to find all the logos were done at 12:30AM that night. It was urgent to receive these, but they went way over expectation.
